Material

After you've chosen the material and color for your ring, our artisan will prepare a metal bar—the exact material for your piece. Using the Tanzo process, you will mold and bend the ring to the appropriate ring size.

The Crafting Begins

Engraving

In jewelry-making, “stamps” refer to metal stamps used for engraving letters or designs. At METHRA, we go beyond the basics by offering:

・A wide variety of ready-made engraving stamps

・ Original emoji-style stamps, handcrafted by our artisans

Twist Design
(Optional)

You can also add a twist design to part of your ring for a unique touch. The tool used to hold the metal securely in place during this process is called a vise. By firmly clamping the material and twisting it 180 degrees with pliers, you can create a beautiful spiral — a distinctive feature that gives your ring its own identity.

Shaping

The flattened metal is shaped into a ring using a wooden mallet and a mandrel. Once it takes the form of a ring, it is further compressed using a special tool, which strengthens the metal — resulting in a highly durable ring, a hallmark of the tanzo (forging) process.

Next comes the soldering process, which seals the gap in the ring. During this stage, participants will have the opportunity to use the torch themselves, closely guided by our experienced artisans.

Filing and Sanding

More tools are used to smoothen the surfaces of your ring. Filing and sanding are essential steps in the ring-making and finishing process. After shaping and soldering a ring, filing is used to smooth out rough edges, remove excess metal, and refine the overall shape. This is followed by sanding, which further smooths the surface and prepares the ring for polishing.

Adding Textures

The ring still has a plain surface at this stage. For those who wish to have a textured ring, this is where hand-hammering comes in. The best part? No two rings have the same texture, so what you own is truly one-of-a-kind! The best part? Each hand-hammered ring is completely unique, ensuring your piece is truly one-of-a-kind.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is it possible for beginners in jewelry-making to make a high-quality ring?

Yes, most of our customers who visit our store are making rings for the first time, but rest assured that our professional engravers will carefully assist you and help you with any difficult parts. We will measure the ring size on the day of your visit to ensure that it fits your finger perfectly. For hand engraving, we will explain and practice how to engrave before the actual engraving. The forging process produces a higher quality ring that is sturdier and less fragile than the lost wax process.

We also offer "lathe processing," in which our craftsmen use a lathe to shape the product, so please consider this option.
